About Us
Amy Blackwood, piano and violin, graduated from
the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a bachelor's degree
in music education with a concentration in orchestra and more recently
received a master’s degree in collaborative piano. During her years as
an undergraduate, she was a member of the University Symphony Orchestra
as a violinist and studied violin under the instruction of Fabrice Dharamraj and Frederic St. Pierre. As a pianist, she
has performed many collaborative recitals with students at the University
as well as with members of the Winston-Salem Symphony and Greensboro
Symphony. For the past five years, she has been the pianist for
the UNC Greensboro Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, and has toured
and performed with the Wind Ensemble throughout the eastern and southern
United States, with performances at the Strathmore in Bethesda, Maryland
and the national CBDNA conference in Austin, Texas. With the Wind Ensemble, she has had the opportunity to work with many professional composers and conductors, including Carter Pann, Joel Pucket, David Dzubay, Frank Ticheli, and H. Robert Reynolds, and has performed on two commercially available recordings: "Premieres!" and "Fireworks!" In 2007, Blackwood
was selected to be a member of the National Wind Ensemble, which included
a short residency in New York City, culminating in a performance at
Carnegie Hall. Blackwood has also been employed as a collaborative pianist
at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, MI for the Summer
Arts Camp. She is a versatile pianist, as comfortable in the classical
music world as she is playing musical theatre and jazz, and has served
as rehearsal pianist, assistant musical director, and performance pianist
for over a dozen community and professional musical theatre productions
in North Carolina. She also studied voice and organ while at UNC Greensboro, is an active church musician, playing organ, piano, and violin for
weddings and other special occasions, and is a member of the professional caroling group, The Greensboro Carolers. She maintains a residence in Greensboro,
North Carolina, where she continues to work as a freelance musician.
Beth Hurley, clarinet,
teaches general music and band at Greensboro Academy. She graduated in
2008 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with her
Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. While at UNCG, she was a member
of the Symphonic and University Bands. In Spring 2008, Hurley was
selected to be a member of the National Wind Ensemble, which included a performance at Carnegie Hall. In addition to her
achievements on clarinet, Hurley also enjoys performing on flute,
saxophone, and voice. She has also worked in Technical Production,
including sound engineering at UNCG and Stage Management for the
Eastern Music Festival. Hurley is the District Director for Mu Phi
Epsilon International Music Fraternity, as well as an active member of
the Collegiate Music Educator's National Conference.
Laura Andersen, viola, of Greensboro, North Carolina has been playing the viola for thirteen years. She received her Bachelor’s in Music Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she studied string pedagogy under Rebecca MacLeod and viola under Scott Rawls. Laura has performed with many area symphonies including the Winston-Salem Symphony, Western Peidmont Symphony and Greensboro Philharmonia and is a member of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in viola performance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where she is a student of Sheila Browne.
Erin Klimstra, cello,
has been the principal cellist with the Greensboro Philharmonia since
2007. She graduated in 2005 from the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro with a Bachelor's degree in cello performance. While at
UNCG, she was a member of the University Symphony Orchestra under the
direction of Robert Gutter and was an active soloist and chamber
musician. Klimstra studied cello under the instruction of Brooks
Whitehouse and Christopher Hutton. Erin continues to perform in the greater
Greensboro area.
